2:58 am - Dance Therapy
|
Quote of the night: "My ass can defeat you."
I'm thoroughly exhausted, so I'm going to keep this brief...
As previously squee'd about, tonight was the gothy dancy thing to which ornithoptercat and I went.
Before the gothy dancy thing there was dinner at a little Mexican-type restaurant near ornithoptercat's place. I'm too fried right now to say much more than: OMG YUM. Blood orange margarita, guacamole with hand-made chips, and black bean soup gooooood.
Right, then, on to the club.
A note about one of the bands that played tonight... Anders Manga is pretty damn good, if you're into gothy electronica kind of stuff. Their sound guys, however, should be FIRED. I recommend buying the CD but not bothering to see the band live until their sound guys get a clue or get replaced.
Also? Why was no one dancing to the band? Or doing much of anything besides standing in a cluster and kind of staring up at the band blankly? Sheesh, who knew a gaggle of goths would be so... tame?? ::snort::
So. I danced. I danced a lot. Then I danced some more. (About two-thirds of the way through the night, I think I even remembered how to dance. ::snerk::) My legs are going to hate me tomorrow. My feet hate me now.
It feels pretty awesome.
By the way nxtwothou, ragdoll, and kabal42 -- I danced extra for all of you as requested. ;)
I need to make a point to get out and do this more often. I miss my dance therapy.
I still miss the Church in Dallas.

10:56 pm - School Blather and Some Other Random Thing
|
Apologies if this entry is duller than dirt. I've been encouraged to post a bit more often. ;)
The new semester begins here in eight days, and I'm frantically attempting to sort out my course schedule.
This time around, the school is offering absolutely nothing useful to me in the way of physical anthropology/biology courses. So, out of lack of anything better to do, I'm going to take this as an opportunity to improve my knowledge of some of the other subfields of anthropology.
Unfortunately, they're not offering a great deal in those, either.
One class that I was interested in taking didn't list a date or time, so I contacted the professor for more information. I heard back from him today, and it turns out that he's not even going to be teaching that class due to lack of interest. *headdesk* He's teaching another course that doesn't particularly appeal to me, but I might take it anyway out of sheer desperation. Ugh.
In other random news… I've been missing the hell out of my club in Dallas lately.
The Church is a goth-type club that operates on Thursday and Sunday nights. In the last few months that I lived in Texas, I was going at least once, and often two times each week. I'd quickly suck down one drink, maybe two, then I'd spend the entire rest of the night on the dance floor. I was usually there until it closed at 4:00 am.
For me, dancing is some of the greatest therapy there is. I can get entirely wrapped up in the music, the lights, the throng of bodies, and just forget everything else for a while. It's an amazing release. Also, just getting out, being around people, and getting some exercise does wonders for fighting off my winter depressions.
There is a pretty decent goth club here in Philly, but it only operates one day per week (Wednesdays) and it's somewhat difficult for me to get to. Still… I'm thinking I should start putting forth the effort to go there semi-regularly. I need my dance therapy.
Hey ornithoptercat -- wanna go dancing..?

8:15 pm - Catching Up, Settling In
|
I've just gone through and friended several more people from Terminus. I likely won't get around to writing up a more thorough wrap-up post about the last couple of days of the con, but I'll say that I spent time hanging out with some really awesome people, and I hope I managed to find them all again here on LJ/IJ. By the way, if I friended you on LJ and you're also active on IJ, please let me know so I can friend you there. Most of my fandom squee is on IJ these days.
Anyway… ( So there was this trip to Tulsa… )
I finally got home from my incredible vacation yesterday around 6:30 pm. No travel difficulties, no delayed flights, no lost luggage; I suppose I'm pretty lucky. Still, after two such great weeks, being back is a bit of a shock.
I managed to get out of the house and be productive today, though. Went to the post office to mail some things to nehalenia and nxtwothou, then hit my favorite fruit stand while I was in the area. Had a doctor's appointment in the late afternoon. Now I'm chatting with folks online and eating delivery food. Maybe it won't be so hard to fall into a routine here again..?
To everyone from Chicago and Tulsa -- I miss you all! Hope you're doing well.

I'm back in Philadelphia.
Best. Vacation. EVER.
Also? Strangest vacation ever...
I'll likely elaborate more in another entry, but for now I wanted to let everyone know that I made it back to Philly in one piece.

1:15 am - Goodbye Chicago
|
Hey all!
This is just a quick post to let everyone know that I made it from Chicago to Tulsa safely. I'll be staying here and hanging out with my mom and various friends for the next week before I head back to Philly.
I'm completely bummed that Terminus is over. The time flew by entirely too quickly. It seemed that, as soon as I really started to get settled in and enjoy the hell out of myself, the whole thing was already drawing to a close.
I still need to do a more thorough con wrap-up post. For now, it's enough to say that it was great hanging out with everyone and putting faces to familiar names. I met so many wonderful people, and I wish I'd had a lot more time to spend with many of them.
I'll be doing some mass friending and commenting over the next few days. If you talked or hung out with me at Terminus, please drop me a note or friend me! There were a lot of cool folks whose LJ/IJ names I didn't quite get.
I miss you all! ::cries::

12:28 pm - Briefly...
|
Wait, where did I leave off..?
Yesterday evening was the general slash meet-up in Grant Park (where I had my badge doodled on by chibitoaster!) followed by the Snarry meet-up at Edwardo's. The Snarry meet-up was huge and wild and loud and awesome. Unfortunately, I was a bit dazed by that point, and I didn't join in the squee as much as I would have liked.
I recovered a bit after dinner, though, so I joined a group of people who migrated over to Grant Park from the Snarry meet-up. We played a game of Fandom Taboo that the fabulous dracofiend made, which was loads of fun even if my team did lose rather badly. Damn cheating Slytherins.
The roomies and I got something like five whole hours of sleep last night before getting up to have breakfast with kabal42. Then, at the god-awful hour of 9:00 am, ragdoll, its_art, and I had our panel on surviving in fandom when your favorite character didn't -- which we, well, survived. Haha.
Now I'm killing another hour in the hotel room until it's time to go to the pub for the Snaco meet-up. Then, this afternoon, I'll be meeting up with sansa1970 again. I foresee much alcohol and giggling in my near future. ;)
As a side note… On the whole, I'm much more tired here at Terminus than I was at Sectus. Did I get old in the last year, or what?? I'm currently vaguely annoyed with myself for not being more energetic. Grr. Bah.

5:33 pm - Terminus Day 2.5?
|
It's a few hours into the second official/full day of Terminus, and I'm back in the hotel room, catching my breath and killing a bit of time until the general slash meet-up. So the LJ/IJ gets an update.
Got up at 9:00 this morning to get dressed and head over to Caribou Coffee for the Snupin meet-up which was COMPLETELY AWESOME, by the way. We were a small but incredibly entertaining and enthusiastic group. I love the Snupin corner of the fandom. It's filled with some of the most fun, friendly, and generally all-around fabulous people out there. ♥
Random waves to drusillas_rain, valis2, marginaliana, bronze_ribbons, leni_jess, gmonkey42, leoninedragon, apythia, tjwritter, alisanne, jin_fenghuang, and lesyeuxverts00 who were at the meet-up with twilightsorcery and me. You all rock!
After the meet-up, ragdoll, its_art, twilightsorcery, and I got together with adinkra (who I'd never met before) for lunch. Now they're all off in various panels and workshops (con programming? What con programming?) and I'm chatting with eeyore9990 (who I wish was here liek whoa). I'll update again tonight if the Snarry folks don't wear me out too badly! ;)

2:41 am - So Many People..!
|
VERY strange dreams last night, but much less tired and much more together today. :P
None of us had any particular place to be this morning, so twilightsorcery, ragdoll, its_art, and I got up pretty much whenever the hell we felt like it. Once we'd put ourselves together, we headed downstairs to one of the hotel's restaurants to have a late breakfast. Belgian waffle with strawberries gooood.
After breakfast, we quickly ran down to registration to pick up our nametags and packets, then headed up to Millennium Park for the Harry/Draco meet-up. OMG everybody. So. Many. People. So many awesome people. I couldn't possibly begin to list all the usernames of all the people I talked with, so I won't even try. I'll just say that it was loads of fun hanging out and talking with so many fandomers -- both familiar and new to me.
The Snack meet-up was supposed to come next, but it seemed that there was, erm, a bit of confusion. Several of us waited at Millennium Park where the meet-up was supposed to take place… but meanwhile, the organizers and a few other people apparently met in the hotel lobby and decided not to go all the way to Millennium Park to hold the meet-up. Erm, headdesk? So twilightsorcery, themostepotente, amanuensis1, nimori, Yolanda (whose username I can't recall; sorry!), and I just hung out for a while before heading back to the hotel.
The Terminus welcome feast was next. Don't have much to say about it other than -- I've eaten worse. :P
Right after the feast, I got a call from sassy_cissa who said, "Hey, sansa1970 is here; come down and meet us!" So I did. (Yeah, like I was gonna miss an opportunity to see sansa1970. ::grin::) Turns up empathic_siren was there as well -- bonus! :D
A big group of us ended up having drinks in the hotel pub -- me, sansa1970, empathic_siren, sassy_cissa, alisanne, dementordelta, twilightsorcery, ragdoll, jin_fenghuang, lesyeuxverts00, kabal42, hpstrangelove, and a couple of other folks whose usernames I didn't catch. We laughed our asses off and made a general nuisance of ourselves until they closed down the porch on which we were sitting.
After getting kicked out of the pub, we moved the party to alisanne and sassy_cissa's room. We stayed there until midnight, and now my roomies and I are back in our own room, geeking out online. You can take the fangeek away from the internet, but you can't take the internet away from the fangeek!
Snupin, general slash, and Snarry meet-ups tomorrow; wooo!

12:54 am - Here in Chicago!
|
I'm at Terminus; woo-hoo! :D
I got to the airport ridiculously early today, but I suppose ridiculously early is better than tragically late. My flight left on time and actually landed slightly early, and my luggage made it to the right place, so no complaints here.
I met twilightsorcery (whose flight came in at about the same time as mine) at the airport, and we were both picked up and driven to the hotel by the lovely sassy_cissa. By the time we got into our room, twilightsorcery and I had just enough time to say hello to ragdoll and its_art, then run out again to meet the group going to the Erotic Harry Potter Night at Quimby's.
Quimby's was much fun. gatewaygirl, bronze_ribbons, mijan, kabal42, and ravenna_c_tan all did a fantastic job reading. It was hilarious, hot, and very interesting to hear the fics read aloud by their own authors. (Although I think I've spent far too much time on fandom pursuits, because I'm pretty sure I've previously read all of the fics from which said authors were reading…)
I ran into tons of people I knew from Sectus, plus a few new folks. There were also loads of people there whose LJ/IJ names I recognized, but it's going to take me all weekend to put names to faces!
After Quimby's, we went to dinner with gatewaygirl, jin_fenghuang, ramblingnic, and Chris-who-may-or-may-not-have-an-LJ/IJ. Mango margarita goooood. ::nod::
We're back at the hotel now, and I'm pretty fried at this point. I need to come up with a whole lot more energy for tomorrow!!
General waves to leni_jess, littleblackbow, bewarethesmirk, and anyone else whose LJ/IJ name I haven't connected yet. SO MANY people, and the conference hasn't even officially started yet!

10:40 pm - Thanks and Counting Down
|
First of all, I want to say THANK YOU to all the people on IJ and LJ who responded to my questions about Snape fans' responses to Snape's death in canon. I was delighted with the thoughtful, in-depth answers you all gave me. I love you, fandom! ♥
I spent the earlier part of the day running errands and doing laundry in preparation for my trip. I'll be doing the majority of my packing tomorrow. I have my current schedule for the conference (OMG meet-ups galore!) ready to print out, and all the important locations plotted on a Google Map. I'm putting some finishing touches on my notes for the panel. I think I'm just about ready to go!
I leave in thirty-six hours! :D
I plan to post Terminus updates from the hotel, so stay tuned. ::grin::

6:36 pm - The Obligatory "Who's Going to Terminus???" Post
|
I can't believe it; Terminus is only a few days away!
Okay, so who's going?? Obviously, there are some of you who I know will be there, because I'm rooming with you or I talk with you regularly or some similar thing. But I don't want to miss anyone, so…
Are you going to Terminus? What day/time are you getting there? Are you staying in the con hotel? What events are you planning to attend? When/where/how can I find you? Will anyone still be around Monday evening?
If anyone is interested, here's what my schedule is looking like so far. This is, of course, subject to change. And there are lots of holes that still need to be filled. ;)

7:39 pm - Stolen from Virtually Everyone
|
I've been getting a huge kick out of reading everyone else's, so I had to play along...
You are in a mall when the zombies attack. You have: 1. one weapon. 2. one song blasting on the speakers. 3. one famous person to fight alongside you.
Weapon can be real or fictional, you may assume endless ammo if applicable. Person can be real or fictional.
1. A Big Damn Sword (what? I prefer the hands-on approach) with a built in Turn Undead spell in case things get hairy. 2. Alice Cooper -- "Welcome to My Nightmare." Bring on the funky-groovy zombie battle, yo! 3. My top three choices, because I can't seem to pick just one: Severus Snape: an uncreative choice, but Sectumsempra would be damn useful against zombies. Leonardo from TMNT: probably my least favorite of the turtles, but his weapon would be the best for loppin' off zombie parts. Jackie Chan: because Jackie Chan + zombies = WIN!

6:29 pm - I Can Has Interwebz Again!
|
I want to take a minute to thank everyone who responded with positive thoughts and well wishes to my post about a week and a half ago. Since then, my situation hasn't really improved much, BUT I'm more mellow and handling the various stresses better. It definitely helps to know that there are people on my side when RL decides to lay the smackdown on me.
Much squeeing and flailing at ships_harry who made me a drawble of Young Ambrose when things were looking bleak here.
Also, special thanks to youngraven for the note checking up on me. Mail is always happy-making!
Oh, and nehalenia -- I got your postcard today! I was laughing in the elevator at the rattlesnakes. People were looking at me funny. Not that that's anything new. ;)
My friends are simply full of win. ♥ ♥ ♥
In other news, my grades for the semester came as a bit of a shock -- in a good way, that is. I somehow pulled off an A in one class and an A+ in another. Yeah, I'll take that. Heh. (My independent study currently has, er, ::cough:: an Incomplete, and I'll be working on that over the summer.)

6:58 pm - Superstitious? I'll Take What I Can Get
|
Things in real life are kind of sucking for me on an epic scale right now. Massive proportions of crap are coming at me from multiple directions. The continued lousy weather is further serving to bring me down in a big way.
I don't especially want to go into detail about all the layers of suck; it wouldn't do me any good and it would bore the snot out of all of you. Let's just say, I'm sure things could always be worse, but stuff is crappy enough for me to be making this post.
And the point of this post is -- please send positive thoughts in my general direction. I don't usually make these requests, but... I'm just hoping that the Universe at Large might hear it and throw me a bone or two.
Also, if I'm a bit out of touch for a while, bear with me.
♥ to all.

6:29 pm - Because IJ is Down (Wankfest Announcement)
|
I don't post fandom-oriented stuff on this journal too much these days, but due to the temporary IJ outage, I need to make a brief announcement about HP Wankfest.
The due date for submissions is tomorrow -- April 16. I figure there are at least a couple of people out there who want to turn in their pieces, but don't know the email address where they should be sending them. It's wanking.mods@gmail.com.
I figure there are also a few people out there who are wondering about extensions. Yes, there will be an option for those who need extensions. We'll make a post once IJ is up and running again.
Don't worry; everything is still on schedule. Posting for the fest doesn't begin until May 1, so this IJ outage shouldn't have a huge effect on the running of things.
If you see anyone wondering about Wankfest, please do direct them to this post. If anyone has questions that I didn't address here, go ahead and ask 'em.
We've received loads of great submissions so far; this is going to be a fantastic fest! See you all over on IJ as soon as it's back up.

11:21 am - Drive-By
|
Just sticking my head in to say two quick things before I leave for class.
1. This movie trailer makes me giggle rather a lot.
2. What makes me giggle even more is the fact that I got the link for the trailer because it went around the Penn anthro emailing list. This just goes to prove, I think, that we really are in it because we all wanna be Indiana Jones.
